I just received an e-mail asking me how to get rid of some fast growing weeds. The person sending me the e-mail did not tell me what kind of
turfgrass was present nor the types of weeds.
I can answer this question in general terms because I don't have the details, but this should help in most
scenarios.
First, a healthy turf is the best weed repellant. If you keep your turf areas well fed, well aereated, and properly watered, you will find that the turf will
keep itself weed free.
Many weed varieties are a sure sign of low fertility in the soil.
Bring your fertility up, that is, give your turf some nutrients. FOOD!
Then attack your weed problem.
In some cases however, the turf can be so far gone as to require a complete renovation. Re-sodding or re-seeding. This is
the more expensive but immediate option. If budget allows, this may be the best route to go.
If you have taken over a property with a weed infested turf,
determine from the owner what expectations they have and how fast they expect a fine weed free turf.
Explain, that a fertilization and herbicide program is
going to take longer than a complete renovation by resodding. If they can afford it, they may want a quick fix.
Once you get your turf back to shape,
remember, a healthy turf is the best antidode for weeds. Occasional spot herbicide treatments and pre-emergence should be all that is necessary from
there.
Till next time,
