Modern Lawn Care And Air Pollution
Article by Donald Dubay
Lawns, landscapes and gardens are a vital part of our environment and they play an important role in our urban-life ecology. Unfortunately, the lawn owners and lawn care workers are not aware of the fact that their modern lawn care systems have directly contributed to around 6 percent of the total air pollution in the country.
The pollution caused by unnatural lawn care practices primarily affects the lawns and secondarily the surrounding environment. While all talk about normal lawn care tips and tricks, no one pays enough attention to the issue of dealing with environmentally hazardous lawn care procedures and technology. Nevertheless, the benefits of resorting to the obvious and the perfect modern lawn service techniques are spontaneous; they have, over the years, reduced the natural greenery of our lawns. The grass may look deep green but they are not as natural as the ones you would find in an old fashioned countryside lawn or landscape. So, you should understand that apart from improper fertilization, defective watering system, improper seeding and inadequate aeration, there must be a better reason that keeps us away from the answer.
One of the biggest lawn air polluters are mowers. Emissions from lawn power equipments like gas mowers, chain saws, snow blowers and leaf vacuums are a serious source of air as well as soil pollution in and around your natural habitat. You may be deceived by the small size of your equipments and their compact engines, but these tiny machines emit very large amount of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide or CO is an odorless and colorless gas that has strong poisonous impact on our biological life.
These lawn machines are also detected for giving out nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. They lead to gradual development of ozone around your lawn’s atmosphere. Ozone, one of the most noxious pollutants, can retard plant growth, cause smog and cause respiratory disorders in humans and animals.
Improper handling and maintenance of power equipments used for lawn service also adds to the aforesaid pollution. This is observed mostly in case of small equipments used by majority of the private lawn owners in our cities. Large equipments on the other hand are safer as they are tested for minimal environmental risks and hazards. However, these equipments are used only by lawn service services and companies.
In US, EPA or Environmental Protection Agency has issued new guidelines in making common lawn service machines less pollution inducing. In the wake of the recent awareness, lawn service equipment manufacturers have recently started working on the issue but the results are not yet rewarding enough.
However, the current situation can be controlled by avoiding high-tech micro mowers and other sophisticated machines that promise to reduce your lawn service time. Also, proper fuel handling, avoiding spillage and timely maintenance of the machines can bring a bit of difference in the overall harm caused.
