5 Key Summer Lawn Care Tips
Article by Michael Page
Despite what you may have read in the mast lawns are pretty high maintenance if you want to keep them looking pristine. However, following this straight forward guide will help keep your lawn in top shape for a minimal investment of time.
Inspecting
During the springtime, the lawn has been kept mown; you did your spring maintenance, and the inspection of the lawn. Now that Summer time is here, you should inspect your lawn once again. Walk around it looking for anything that may need to be fixed. Perhaps, now that spring is over, you have noticed more birds pecking around the yard. Perhaps you are beginning to see some brown spots on the lawn; or maybe the spring rain has washed away some of the loose soil, causing holes or trenches in the lawn. Check again to ensure that no unwanted bugs have taken up residency on your lawn.
Watering
Lawn Grass does not grow as fast in the summer time as it does in the spring, so to keep from over watering it, only water it once a week. As the temperature outside gets hotter, you may decide to water it more frequently, just not as much as you do during the spring. What will happen is the grass will tend to sprout new leaves, and then during the afternoon when the sun is at its peak, the leaves will wilt faster. The best time to water the lawn during the summer is after 4:00 P.M. When the grass turns brown, it is showing signs of drought or lack of water. This should be the time to just let a shallow watering would help the most, instead of a deeper soaking. If you see that sections of the lawn are turning brown check to see if it needs to be mowed or skipped. Also, try to keep heavy traffic off the lawn.
Pest Control
I know you have used pesticides and fertilizers during the spring, however, the effects of the pesticides should be kept up, if you have seen more birds pecking around the lawn it means that summer time bugs have flown in and are starting to bed in the lawn, this also happens with some types of ants. In the Southern States, fire ants are a real problem, and just applying fire and killer on the ant hills does not help that much; the Queen will just move the colony a few yards away and begin a new colony. There are also different types of ants to worry about. You should walk around your home and inspect all the wood, even in the shrubbery, large red carpenter ants eat and build with dried out pieces of wood. If you cannot find the nest, it may be a good idea to call in a pest control agent to locate the colony.
What to Wear
Many people mow the lawn in short sleeve shirts and shorts, however this is not a good idea. The lawn mower does have a guard on it, but still that is not enough, the blades on the mower can throw sticks and pebbles against a structure of some kind and bounce back to hit you, so always wear long sleeves and long pants, or jeans. Also, wear socks that will cover your ankles, and proper shoes, not flip-flops or some type that will show your feet, never mow the lawn bare footed. Stay Hydrated
The summer time is the hottest time of the year. Always have plenty to drink while you are working on your lawn. Many people have become very over heated because they did not take some liquid to drink while they were working. This is the time people can have a heat stroke, this is the worst possible scenario, and it can happen very easily.
