Atlanta lawn care tips for the summer
Article by Fred Savage
April is by tradition a transitional month where we say farewell to spring and welcome in the beginning of summer. For most gardeners this period is very important as it marks a time of final preparations before the hot humid weather, traditional in the southern U.S, strikes. When considering laying a new lawn or treating an existing one it is advisable to seek helpful tips on protecting your lawn throughout the summer.
A common mistake of some gardeners is to underestimate just how quickly the hot weather can destroy a garden lawn by depleting the local water source. During August, there will be the annual water restrictions enforced, especially for watering lawns. So what actions can we take to prepare our garden lawns before the summer heat comes and with it a whole host of pests and weeds?
Wherever there is humid weather there will always be thunder storms and these can offer some respite in terms of rainfall, being prepared to catch this water in a water barrel is advisable. When this natural rain water is collected it is a great back up supply for the hot summer months. It is always advisable to water your garden lawn in the evening after sunset as this will conserve your water longer. It is so rewarding to see a healthy lawn each morning with fresh droplets of due, knowing that our garden is in full bloom.
It is advisable in spring time to comb your lawn through with a rake or a mechanical scarifier. A normal garden fork will help aerate the soil if you don’t own a mechanical scarifier. Once you have aerated the lawn soil it is always advisable to treat the soil with a mixed fertilizer and weed killer. Make sure that what you buy is specially prepared for lawns and if unsure always seek advice from a trusted Atlanta lawn care expert. Seeking professional advice is always beneficial as there have been stories of herbicides destroying everything in a garden including the lawn.
Throughout the grass growing season you should try to cut your lawn at least twice a week. To ensure the blades of grass are cut sharply it is wise to invest in a lawn mower and have it serviced regularly. Keeping your lawn trim and healthy is also a great method of implementing weed control.
Your property depends greatly on how well you tend to your garden and lawn. A good lawn feature can increase the value of a home considerably. A garden that appears to be well tended to will let a potential buyer know that the property is a sound investment. Here are some more great tips and ideas to implement before the summer arrives:
• Mowing your lawn in a different direction each time ensures a more even cut• Planting seasonal flowers can give your lawn a vivacious look all year round• Trim trees to keep a tailored look in the yard• If your lawn has developed a mold growth due to winter snow, rake the grass and keep your lawn uncovered during the first weeks of spring
